How Much Does a Trip to Egypt Cost?

    8 min readTravel Tips

    Quick answer

Hotel level, private or group touring, the Nile cruise, domestic flights, and inclusions drive the cost. Here is how to build an honest Egypt trip total.

The cost of an Egypt trip depends mainly on five things: hotel level, whether the tour is private or group-based, the Nile cruise category, domestic flights, and what is actually included in the published price. Compare the total trip cost, including tickets, extras, and tips, rather than the headline package price.

There is no useful single price for an Egypt trip, because two 10-day itineraries can look similar on paper and be very different products. One may include every flight, ticket, and guide, with a well-known cruise ship and central hotels. Another may show a lower price but leave domestic flights, entrance fees, and half the sightseeing to be paid separately. The difference only becomes clear when you put them side by side.

This guide explains what drives the cost of an Egypt trip, what is usually included and excluded, and how to build an honest trip total so you can compare quotes fairly and plan your budget with confidence.

    The main cost drivers

    Accommodation

Accommodation is one of the largest variables. Cairo has a wide range of hotels, from practical city properties to international luxury brands, and the difference between them can change the trip price significantly. Location matters as well: a hotel near the pyramids or on the Nile costs more than one farther out, but it can save time in traffic.

    The Nile cruise

Nile cruise standards vary considerably. The difference between a standard cabin on a large ship and a suite on a higher-end vessel, or a small dahabiya, can change the package price more than an extra sightseeing day. Cabin position, sailing length, season, and how full the ship is all play a part.

    Private or group touring

Private touring costs more per person for one or two travelers because the guide and vehicle are dedicated to your party. In a small group, those costs are shared. For families or groups of friends traveling together, private travel can become much more competitive per person.

    Domestic flights

A well-designed itinerary may include Cairo to Aswan or Cairo to Luxor flights and a return sector. Check whether they are included, estimated, or charged separately. Flight prices change with availability and booking date, so operators may handle them in different ways.

    Season

Peak season, roughly from October to April and especially around the year-end holidays, brings higher hotel and cruise rates and less availability. Summer is often lower priced in Upper Egypt because of the heat, while Red Sea resorts stay busy through the summer.

Trip length and the number of destinations

Every extra destination adds more than a hotel night. It usually brings another flight or long transfer, another set of entrance tickets, and another guide. A 10-day trip that covers Cairo and the Nile at an easy pace can cost less than a 10-day trip that also squeezes in Abu Simbel, Alexandria, and the Red Sea. When you compare quotes, check how many places each one covers, not only how many days it lasts.

    What a package usually includes

A comprehensive Egypt tour with a Nile cruise typically includes:

    • Hotel nights in Cairo with breakfast
    • The Nile cruise with full board
    • Domestic flights, or clearly stated as excluded
    • Airport meet-and-greet and all transfers
    • Guided sightseeing with a licensed Egyptologist
    • Entrance fees for the sites listed, or clearly stated as excluded

When any of these items is missing from the inclusion list, ask for the cost before you compare. You can see how we set this out in our Egypt tours.

Costs that often sit outside the price

    ItemWhy it matters
Entrance feesSome tours include every ticket; others exclude them so travelers can choose
Special tombsTutankhamun, Seti I, and Nefertari each need their own ticket
Abu SimbelUsually optional, by road or by air
    Luxor balloon flightOptional, weather-dependent
Great Pyramid interiorSeparate ticket at Giza
Meals not includedCity hotels often include breakfast only
DrinksUsually extra on cruises and in restaurants

VisaEntry rules depend on your passport and can change, so please check the official source before you travel.
    Travel insuranceStrongly recommended
Pre-tour and post-tour nightsOften needed around long-haul flights

Entrance fees deserve particular attention. Ticket prices for foreign visitors at major sites have risen in recent years and can change with little notice, so a tour that excludes them may be noticeably more expensive in practice than it first appears.

How to build an honest trip total

A fair comparison is to create a trip total for each quote:

    1. Start with the package price for the number of travelers and the room configuration you need.
    2. Add entrance fees if they are excluded, using the operator's estimate.
    3. Add the optional tours you genuinely plan to take, such as Abu Simbel, a special tomb or a balloon flight.
    4. Add pre-tour and post-tour hotel nights if your flights require them.
    5. Add tips, using the operator's current suggested range.
    6. Add your visa and travel insurance.
    7. Add meals not included and a realistic amount for drinks.
    8. Add personal spending for shopping and extras.

A cheaper package can end up costing more if many essentials sit outside the price. Equally, an all-inclusive quote that looks higher may be the better value once everything is added. The point is to compare the trip you will actually take.

International flights are a separate line in your budget. They depend on your home city, routing, season, and how far ahead you book, and most Egypt tours quote them separately. Ask each operator to quote for the same dates, the same room type, and the same number of travelers, otherwise the comparison is not fair. If one quote is in a different currency, convert it on the same day you compare.

Where to save, and where not to

    Some savings make sense:

    • Travel in shoulder season, such as late October, November, late February, or March, for good weather with lower prices than peak holiday weeks.
    • Choose a standard cabin on a good ship rather than a suite, if you will spend most of your time on deck or ashore.
    • Share costs by traveling as a family or with friends on a private tour.
    • Be selective with optional tours, choosing the ones you really care about.

Other savings tend to cost you on the trip:

    • Skipping a licensed Egyptologist makes the sites far harder to understand.
    • Very cheap cruises can mean older ships, rushed excursions, and large groups.
    • Removing domestic flights in favor of long road or overnight train journeys can cost you a day of sightseeing.
    • Choosing remote hotels to save money can add hours in Cairo traffic.

Private versus small group: a cost comparison

    FactorPrivate tourSmall group
Cost per person for 1 to 2 travelersHigherLower
Cost per person for 4 or moreOften competitiveSimilar or lower
    FlexibilityFullFixed itinerary
    DatesYour choiceSet departures
PaceAdjusted to youSet for the group

Private touring suits travelers who want flexibility, a specific pace or special interests. Small-group touring suits travelers who want a lower price per person and enjoy company. For families of four or more, it is worth asking for both quotes.

    Frequently asked questions

Is Egypt cheap for American travelers?

Some local costs, such as meals, taxis, and small purchases, can be lower than in the U.S. But a multi-city guided trip with domestic flights, a Nile cruise, and good hotels is still a substantial travel purchase, and international flights add significantly to the total.

Are entrance fees included in Egypt tours?

It depends on the operator and the itinerary. Some include every ticket for the sites listed, while others exclude them. Special tombs and the interior of the Great Pyramid usually carry separate tickets. Check the inclusion list carefully and ask for an estimate in writing.

Why do Nile cruise prices vary so much?

The ship's standard, cabin type, season, sailing length, and availability all affect the price. A higher-end ship or a dahabiya with fewer cabins costs more than a large standard ship, and peak holiday weeks command higher rates than summer departures.

How much should I budget for tips?

Tipping is customary in Egypt for guides, drivers, cruise crew, and hotel and restaurant staff. Amounts vary by service and length of trip, so ask your tour operator for current guidelines and set aside cash in Egyptian pounds for it.

Is a private tour worth the extra cost?

For couples and solo travelers, a private tour costs more per person but gives you your own guide, flexible timing, and a pace built around you. For families and groups of four or more, the price gap narrows, and private touring often offers better value for the flexibility.
