Alexandria in brief
Alexandria offers a distinct Mediterranean atmosphere that differs significantly from Cairo and Luxor. The city is defined by its Hellenistic history, Roman ruins, and its role as a modern academic hub on the northern coast.
Why visit Alexandria
Alexandria feels more like a Mediterranean city than a desert one. You can see the Citadel of Qaitbay standing at the harbor where a famous lighthouse once stood. Nearby, the modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina offers a large space for books and art, while the Alexandria National Museum displays objects from the city's various historical eras. The Corniche runs along the waterfront, connecting these sites to the busy local neighborhoods.
You should head underground to see the Catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa or visit Pompey's Pillar and the Roman Theater at Kom el-Dikka to see ancient ruins right in the middle of town. The city is best experienced as a destination of its own rather than just a quick stop. Spending time here allows you to move between these archaeological sites and the cafes along the coast at a slower pace.

Useful travel information for Alexandria
Best time to visit
Visit between October and April when the coastal weather is milder. Spring and fall offer comfortable conditions for walking through the outdoor ruins.
How many days?
Plan to stay two full days to see the major sites without rushing. This allows enough time to explore both the waterfront and the inland archaeological zones.
Getting around
Yellow and black taxis are widely available, though ride-hailing apps are often more convenient for fixed pricing. The tram system is a local way to travel but moves slowly through the city center.
FAQs
Alexandria FAQs
Is Alexandria a day trip from Cairo?
It is possible to visit in a single day, but the drive takes about three hours each way. Staying overnight is better if you want to see the catacombs, the library, and the citadel without spending six hours in a car.
Is Alexandria safe for tourists?
The city is generally safe for international visitors who stick to well-known districts and historic sites. Like any large port city, stay aware of your surroundings in crowded markets and use registered transport.
Can you swim in the sea in Alexandria?
Most central beaches are crowded and used primarily for sitting and socializing. If you want to swim, head to the private beaches at hotels or the Montaza gardens area further east.
What is the best way to get from Cairo to Alexandria?
The train is the most common choice, with frequent departures from Ramses Station in Cairo to Sidi Gaber or Misr Station. You can also take a private car or a bus via the desert road.
Do I need a guide for the catacombs and ruins?
While you can walk through the sites on your own, a guide helps explain the mix of Egyptian and Roman styles. The signage at the Catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa and Kom el-Dikka is helpful but limited.
