Istanbul is a major city where Europe and Asia meet across the Bosphorus Strait. It is known for its Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman history, reflected in its massive domes, minarets, and historic markets.
You can explore Istanbul's historic peninsula by connecting its major landmarks on foot. The mosques, palaces, and underground cisterns in this area sit close to one another, but each site has its own set of rules and history. Following a route through these neighborhoods helps you navigate the different entry requirements and visiting rhythms of each monument.
You will get the most out of your visit by selecting a few specific sights rather than trying to see everything at once. Moving at a human pace allows you to appreciate the distinct character of each location. You can coordinate your visits to these local sights with Nourbelle Tours to manage your time across the peninsula.

Plan your visit
The most comfortable months for walking the city are May, June, September, and October. These months avoid the peak heat of summer and the rain of winter.
Plan for at least four to five days to cover the main historic sites on both sides of the city. This allows enough time to visit the peninsula and take a ferry across the water.
The tram and ferry systems are reliable ways to avoid heavy traffic. Most visitors use a rechargeable Istanbulkart to pay for all public transit options.
FAQs
Entry rules depend on your passport and can change, so please check the official source before you travel.
Istanbul is generally safe for travelers, though you should stay aware of your surroundings in crowded markets and transit hubs. Stick to well-lit main streets at night and use official yellow taxis or ride-hailing apps.
Both men and women should wear clothing that covers their shoulders and knees. Women are also required to cover their hair with a scarf before entering a mosque.
Major hotels, restaurants, and shops accept credit cards, but you should carry some local cash for small purchases. Street food vendors and smaller stalls in the markets often prefer Turkish Lira.
Locals and visitors generally drink bottled or filtered water rather than water straight from the tap. You will find bottled water for sale at almost every small grocery store and street kiosk.
