    Ephesus & Selcuk in brief

Ephesus is a major archaeological site known for its well-preserved Roman ruins and the Library of Celsus. You should visit because it offers a clear look at how an ancient Mediterranean city functioned, from its streets to its theaters.

    Why visit Ephesus & Selcuk

Ephesus is an ancient city in the Aegean region where you spend most of your time walking through ruins. The experience centers on these archaeological sites, but you should also explore the town of Selcuk and the surrounding hills.

You will get the most out of your visit if you treat the area as its own destination. Instead of rushing a day trip from Istanbul, give yourself enough time to see the landscape and the local sights at a steady pace.

Useful travel information for Ephesus & Selcuk

    Best time to visit

The most comfortable months for walking the marble streets are April, May, October, and November. These periods avoid the peak summer heat and the heaviest crowds.

    How many days?

Plan for two full days to see the main ruins and the nearby sites in Selcuk without rushing. One day is often too short for the local museums and the surrounding countryside.

    Getting around

You can walk to many sites from Selcuk town center or take the local minibuses, called dolmuses, to the Ephesus gate. Taxis are also readily available for reaching the House of the Virgin Mary.

    FAQs

    Ephesus & Selcuk FAQs

How much walking is involved at Ephesus?

Expect to walk at least two to three miles on uneven marble and stone paths. The site is a linear downhill or uphill walk, so comfortable shoes with good grip are necessary.

Is it better to stay in Selcuk or Kusadasi?

Selcuk is better if you want a quiet atmosphere within walking distance of the ruins and local museums. Kusadasi is a larger port town geared toward cruise ships and beach resorts.

Can you see Ephesus as a day trip from Istanbul?

It is possible if you take an early flight to Izmir and a late flight back, but it makes for a very long day. Staying overnight allows you to see the ruins when they are less crowded.

Are the Terrace Houses worth the extra ticket?

Many travelers find the extra cost worthwhile to see the preserved frescoes and floor mosaics. This section is covered by a separate roof and offers a close look at Roman domestic life.

What should I bring for a visit to the ruins?

Bring plenty of water, a hat, and sunscreen because there is very little shade at the archaeological site. An umbrella can also provide portable shade during the sunniest parts of the day.
