Doing Laundry During an Egypt Trip

    8 min readTravel Tips

    Quick answer

Send one load to hotel or cruise laundry mid-trip and sink-wash small items in between. How each option works, and how to pack so you need less washing.

On most Egypt trips the simplest approach is to send one load to hotel or cruise-ship laundry mid-trip, usually returned within about a day and priced per item, and to sink-wash small items in between. Local laundries in Cairo, Luxor and Aswan cost much less but need a day and some local help to arrange.

A 10- to 14-day Egypt itinerary produces laundry quickly. Early starts, dusty archaeological sites, warm afternoons and a mix of city, desert and river days mean clothes need changing more often than at home. Packing a separate outfit for every day is the most common reason travelers end up with heavy, overfull bags.

The good news is that keeping clothes clean in Egypt is easy once you know the options. This guide explains how hotel and cruise laundry works, when local laundries make sense, how to wash items yourself, and how to pack so you need less washing in the first place.

    Hotel laundry: convenient and predictable

Most four- and five-star hotels in Egypt offer laundry and pressing. You will usually find a laundry bag and a price list in the wardrobe or desk drawer. Fill in the form, put the bag out, or call housekeeping, and the clothes come back folded or on hangers.

    A few things to know:

    • Pricing is per item. Each shirt, pair of pants or dress is charged separately, so costs add up with small items. Check the current price list in your room before you send anything.
    • Timing matters. Most hotels offer same-day or next-day return if you hand items in during the morning. Ask at reception what time the cut-off is.
    • Express service is often available at a higher charge.
    • Pressing only is usually cheaper than washing, which is useful for a shirt or dress needed for dinner.

Hotel laundry works best when you are staying at least two nights in the same place, so there is no risk of leaving before your clothes come back. Plan the first laundry load for the first multi-night stop on your itinerary, often Cairo or Luxor.

    Laundry on a Nile cruise

Nile cruise ships also offer laundry service with a per-item price list in the cabin. Because ships keep moving, timing is straightforward: you hand in a bag in the morning and get it back later that day or the next day, before you disembark.

On a three- or four-night cruise, the second day is a good moment to send laundry. You will have worn your travel clothes and at least one full day of sightseeing outfits, and there is enough time left for the clothes to come back. On longer cruises, you can send laundry more than once.

Cabin space on ships is limited, so avoid drying lots of hand-washed items in the cabin. A couple of socks or a T-shirt in the bathroom is fine; a full line of clothes is not.

    Local laundries: cheaper, slower

Cairo, Luxor and Aswan all have neighborhood laundries and dry cleaners, often called makwagi when they focus on ironing. They are much cheaper than hotels and usually charge by item or by weight. Clothes are typically returned the next day, washed and neatly pressed.

    Local laundries make sense when:

    • you have a large load, for example after a desert trip;
    • you are staying several nights in one place;
    • you are traveling on a tighter budget.

They are less convenient for short stays because you need to drop off and collect the clothes, and opening hours vary. If you are traveling with a guide or tour company, ask them to recommend a reliable laundry or to help arrange pickup. Many smaller hotels and guesthouses will also arrange local laundry for a modest fee.

Self-service laundromats with coin machines are uncommon in Egypt, so do not plan around them.

    Washing clothes yourself

Hand-washing a few items is often the easiest way to bridge the gap between laundry loads. Egypt's dry air helps: lightweight fabrics often dry overnight, even in winter, and in a few hours in summer.

A small kit makes it simple:

    • A travel clothesline or a few clips for hanging items in the bathroom or on a balcony.
    • A small bottle of travel detergent or detergent sheets.
    • A universal sink plug, since some bathroom sinks do not have one.
    • Quick-dry underwear and socks, which wash and dry far faster than cotton.

Wash items in the evening, roll them in a towel to remove excess water and hang them where air circulates. Avoid hanging clothes over lamps or air-conditioning units. Heavy cotton and denim may take more than one night to dry, particularly in cooler months.

How to pack so you need less laundry

Good packing reduces the need for washing more than anything else. Choose lightweight, breathable fabrics that dry quickly and can be layered. Neutral colors that mix and match let you rewear items in different combinations.

    A practical base for a 10- to 14-day trip:

    ItemSuggested quantityNotes
Lightweight long-sleeved shirts or blouses2 to 3Protect from sun and suit mosques and churches
T-shirts or tops3 to 4Quick-dry fabrics are easiest
Lightweight pants or long skirts2 to 3Covering knees is useful at religious sites
Underwear and socksAbout 5 to 7 daysWash midway
A warm layer1For winter evenings, desert nights and air-conditioned buses
Swimwear and sandals1 setFor the ship pool, a resort or the Red Sea
A smarter outfit1For dinners and evenings on the cruise

With this base, expect to send one laundry load mid-trip and to wash small items once or twice. If your trip includes a Red Sea beach stay at the end, you may be able to save your laundry until then, when you will have more time.

    Dust, sand and stains

Archaeological sites, desert drives and the Western Desert are dusty. Dust brushes off most quick-dry fabrics easily, but fine sand can work its way into seams and shoes. A few habits help:

    • Shake out clothes and shoes before packing them away.
    • Keep a separate bag for worn clothes to keep clean items fresh.
    • Treat food stains as soon as you can with a little soap and water.
    • Choose darker or patterned fabrics for long sightseeing days.

Laundry around desert trips and the Red Sea

Some parts of an Egypt itinerary need a little extra planning. Desert trips, such as a night in the White Desert or a visit to the Western Desert oases, usually involve simple camps or small hotels without laundry service. Go into them with clean clothes and come out with a bag ready to wash at your next hotel.

Red Sea resorts in Hurghada, El Gouna, or Marsa Alam generally offer laundry service in the same way as city hotels. Because beach stays are often longer and more relaxed, they are a good place to catch up on washing before you fly home. Swimwear dries fast in the sun, but rinse it in fresh water after swimming in the sea or a chlorinated pool to make it last.

If you are continuing to another country after Egypt, such as Jordan or Turkey, try to send a load in your last multi-night stop so you start the next part of the trip with clean clothes.

    Frequently asked questions

Is laundry available on Nile cruise ships?

Yes. Nile cruise ships offer laundry service with a per-item price list in the cabin, and items handed in during the morning are usually returned later that day or the next day. On a short cruise, send laundry on the second day so it comes back before you disembark.

How much does hotel laundry cost in Egypt?

Hotel laundry is charged per item, and prices vary by hotel and change over time. Check the price list in your room before sending anything, and wash small items such as underwear and socks yourself to keep costs down.

Are local laundries in Egypt reliable?

Neighborhood laundries are widely used by residents and are generally reliable, with clothes usually returned washed and pressed the next day. Ask your hotel or guide to recommend one, and avoid using them on a stay of a single night.

Does sink-washed laundry dry overnight in Egypt?

Lightweight and quick-dry fabrics usually dry overnight thanks to the dry climate. Heavy cotton and denim may need longer, especially in winter or in an air-conditioned room.

How many clothes should I pack for two weeks in Egypt?

Pack for about a week, using lightweight, mix-and-match pieces, and plan one laundry load midway. That keeps your bags lighter and still leaves you with clean clothes throughout the trip.
