Egypt Airports Guide: Codes, Terminals and Transfer Times

    8 min readTravel Tips

    Quick answer

Know the main Egypt airport codes, why CAI and SPX in Cairo are not interchangeable, and realistic transfer ranges for Cairo, Luxor, Aswan and the Red Sea.

Most first-time Egypt itineraries use Cairo plus one or two domestic airports. CAI is the main international gateway, LXR and ASW serve the Nile Valley, and HRG, SSH and RMF serve the Red Sea. Codes matter because Cairo has two airports, CAI and SPX, and choosing the wrong one can add a long ground transfer.

Airport choice shapes an Egypt trip more than many travelers expect. The right arrival airport can save an hour of traffic on your first evening, and the right domestic airport decides whether your cruise embarkation is relaxed or rushed. Transfer times also vary widely, from 10 minutes at some Red Sea airports to well over an hour across Cairo.

This guide lists the main airport codes, explains where each fits an itinerary, gives realistic transfer ranges and covers the planning decisions that matter most.

Transfer ranges are typical, not guaranteed. Traffic, time of day, terminal access, baggage and security all affect them.

Cairo: CAI and SPX are not the same airport

    Cairo International (CAI)

CAI is in Heliopolis, northeast of central Cairo. It handles most international flights and most domestic EgyptAir services. If you are staying downtown, in Zamalek or near the Nile Corniche, the transfer is usually reasonable outside rush hours. To Giza, it means crossing the city, which can take well over an hour in heavy traffic.

    Sphinx International (SPX)

SPX lies west of the city, beyond Giza. It handles a smaller number of domestic and international services and can be convenient for hotels near the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum. For central or eastern Cairo, it is usually the less convenient choice.

    Why this matters when booking

A flight search that simply says "Cairo" can hide this difference. Check the airport code on every ticket, especially on low-cost or charter flights. If your first nights are in Giza, an SPX arrival may be worth considering; if they are downtown, CAI usually wins. See our Cairo and Giza pages for help choosing where to stay.

    Cairo International terminals

Cairo International operates several terminals, and airlines are assigned to them. Assignments can change, so check your ticket and the airport's or airline's information close to departure rather than relying on older guides.

    Connections at Cairo

If you connect from an international flight to a domestic one at Cairo, allow generous time. You may need to clear immigration, collect bags, go through customs, move between terminals and re-check in, with terminal entrance security as well. A same-day connection is possible, but a tight one is risky. Many itineraries simply spend the first night in Cairo and fly south the next day.

Upper Egypt airports: Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel

    Luxor (LXR)

Luxor's airport is east of the city and handles domestic flights from Cairo and some international and charter services. Transfers to East Bank hotels and cruise moorings are short; the West Bank takes longer because of the river crossing by road.

    Aswan (ASW)

Aswan's airport lies southwest of the city, on the west side of the Nile. Transfers to central hotels and cruise moorings are usually under 40 minutes. Aswan is also the main base for flights to Abu Simbel.

    Abu Simbel (ABS)

This small airport serves the temples directly, with flights usually from Aswan. Time at the temples is set by the return flight, so the visit is efficient but fixed. See our Abu Simbel page for how to compare flying and driving.

    Matching flights to a cruise

Typical Nile cruises are three nights from Aswan to Luxor, four nights from Luxor to Aswan, or seven nights round trip. Your sailing date and direction should decide your domestic flights: fly into the embarkation city and out of the disembarkation city. Even though Upper Egypt transfers are short, the arrival time still matters for embarkation, sightseeing and hotel check-in.

    Red Sea airports

    Hurghada (HRG)

A busy Red Sea gateway, with domestic flights from Cairo and many international and charter services. Transfers to central Hurghada are short; resort zones such as El Gouna, Makadi and Sahl Hasheesh take longer.

    Sharm El Sheikh (SSH)

Close to the main resort areas of Sharm, Sharks Bay and Naama Bay, with short transfers to most hotels.

    Marsa Alam (RMF)

Close to Port Ghalib but much farther from Marsa Alam town and some southern resorts. The hotel name is as important as the airport code when estimating transfer time.

Combining the Red Sea with the Nile

Hurghada is a common beach extension after a Nile trip. Depending on schedules, you can fly via Cairo or travel by road from Luxor, which takes several hours.

    Other airports you may see

Egypt has further airports that appear on some itineraries, including Borg El Arab (HBE) near Alexandria, Taba (TCP) in Sinai and El Alamein (DBB) on the Mediterranean coast. Services to these vary by season, so check schedules before planning around them. For Alexandria, many travelers drive from Cairo instead of flying.

Sample airport plans for common itineraries

Matching airports to the shape of your trip is easier with a few examples.

    Cairo and a Luxor-to-Aswan cruise

Arrive at CAI and spend two or three nights in Cairo or Giza. Fly CAI to LXR on the morning of embarkation, sail four nights to Aswan, then fly ASW back to CAI for your international departure, ideally with a buffer night in Cairo or a comfortable connection.

Cairo, the Nile and the Red Sea

Arrive at CAI, fly to Aswan for a three-night cruise to Luxor, then continue to Hurghada by road or by flying via Cairo. Fly home from HRG if suitable international services exist, or return to Cairo first.

    Cairo with Abu Simbel

Add an Aswan stay and a short ASW to ABS flight, or drive from Aswan. Flying makes the day easier but fixes your time at the temples to the return flight.

In each case, the international ticket and the domestic flights should be planned together, not separately, so that arrival times, terminals and cruise days line up.

    Planning tips

    • Check every airport code. Especially in Cairo, where CAI and SPX are far apart.
    • Consider an open-jaw ticket. Flying into Cairo and out of Luxor or Hurghada can avoid backtracking.
    • Avoid tight same-day connections. A night in Cairo between an international arrival and a domestic flight reduces stress.
    • Let your sailing date lead. Cruise days are fixed; flights should fit around them.
    • Use transfer ranges, not exact times. Build in buffers, especially in Cairo.
    • Confirm your terminal before departure. Terminal assignments can change.

    Frequently asked questions

Which Cairo airport should I use?

It depends on your flight and where your first hotel is. CAI is the main gateway and usually suits central Cairo, while SPX can be convenient for Giza and the Pyramids area, but the two are not interchangeable and are far apart.

Which airport is best for a Nile cruise?

Luxor (LXR) or Aswan (ASW), depending on the direction of your cruise. Fly into the embarkation city and out of the disembarkation city, and let your sailing date determine the flights, not the other way around.

How early should I arrive for a domestic flight?

Follow the airline's current check-in guidance, and allow extra time at Cairo, where terminal entrance security and check-in can be slow. Your tour operator should plan pickups around transfer and security time rather than the scheduled departure minute.

Can airport transfer times be guaranteed?

No. Traffic, terminal access, baggage and security make transfer times ranges rather than fixed figures. Cairo in particular can vary a great deal by time of day.

Should I connect directly to a domestic flight on arrival day?

It is possible, but a tight connection is risky because you may need to clear immigration, collect bags and change terminals. Many itineraries spend the first night in Cairo and fly south the next morning.
