Saqqara and Dahshur are worth a visit for anyone interested in how the pyramids evolved from stacked mastabas to smooth-sided structures. These sites are usually less crowded than Giza and include early stone buildings and detailed tomb carvings.
Drive south of Giza to see where the Egyptians tested their pyramid designs. At the Saqqara Necropolis, you can walk around the Step Pyramid of Djoser and go inside the Pyramid of Unas or the Pyramid of Teti. The area is also known for the Serapeum and the detailed wall reliefs found in the tombs of Mereruka and Ti.
At nearby Dahshur, you will find the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid. These sites show the transition toward the smooth-sided shapes seen at Giza. The ruins of Memphis are close by and help connect the history of these burial grounds. Because these locations cover a lot of ground, you should plan your route based on drive times between each site.

Plan your visit
Visit between October and April. These months offer the most comfortable weather for walking across the open desert plateaus.
Plan for one full day to see both areas comfortably. It takes about 45 minutes to drive between the two sites, so a single day trip from Cairo works well.
The sites are spread out, so you will need a private car and driver for the day. Taxis can take you there, but you should arrange for them to wait while you explore each location.
FAQs
Yes, you can enter several pyramids here, including the Red Pyramid and the Step Pyramid. The interiors are often less crowded than the Great Pyramid of Giza, though the passages are narrow and steep.
It depends on your interests, but some visitors prefer Saqqara because it covers a larger area and feels more peaceful. While Giza has the largest monuments, Saqqara offers a wider variety of tomb art and early architectural styles.
The drive from central Cairo or Giza usually takes about 45 to 60 minutes depending on traffic. Dahshur is another 15 to 20 minutes further south from the main Saqqara entrance.
Having a guide is helpful to navigate the large necropolis and explain the complex history of the different dynasties. A guide can also help coordinate transportation between the scattered tomb clusters and pyramid sites.
Wear sturdy walking shoes and loose, breathable clothing that protects you from the sun. The terrain is sandy and uneven, so footwear with good grip is important if you plan to climb down into the pyramids.
