Siwa Oasis is worth visiting for travelers who want to see a distinct Berber culture and distinctive mud-brick architecture. It is known for its vast date groves, saltwater lakes, and the ancient temple where Alexander the Great is said to have consulted an oracle.
Siwa sits far into the Western Desert, away from the typical Nile route. You will find a landscape of date groves, salt lakes, and old mud-brick architecture. Start at the Shali Fortress ruins and the Temple of the Oracle to understand the history here. The Mountain of the Dead and Cleopatra's Spring are central to the local geography and provide a look at how the oasis functioned over centuries.
Respect for local traditions is important when you visit the salt lakes and community areas. If you plan to see the Great Sand Sea, you must arrange a local guide rather than attempting to drive into the dunes on your own. This region moves at its own pace, so allow enough time to navigate the distances between the town center and the surrounding desert sites.

Plan your visit
The most comfortable months to visit are October through April. Avoid the summer months when the desert heat is at its peak.
Plan for at least three to four days to cover the main sites at a comfortable pace. This allows enough time for the long drive from Cairo or Alexandria.
Most people get around the town center using three-wheeled carts called tricycles. For reaching the salt lakes or desert areas, you will need to hire a local driver with a 4x4 vehicle.
FAQs
You can take a night bus from Cairo, which usually takes about 10 to 12 hours. Another option is hiring a private car and driver for the journey across the desert road.
Siwa is a conservative community, so it is best to wear loose clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. When swimming in public springs like Cleopatra's, many travelers choose to wear a T-shirt over their swimwear to be respectful.
No, you should not attempt to drive into the deep desert on your own. You are required to have a permit and a local guide who knows the terrain and how to navigate the dunes safely.
Many people in the tourism industry speak English, but the local language is Siwi, a Berber dialect. Arabic is also widely spoken and understood in the oasis.
The salt lakes are safe for floating because the high salt content makes you very buoyant. Be sure to bring fresh water to rinse off afterward, as the salt can be itchy on your skin once it dries.
