Instantly Available vs On-Request Nile Cruises

    8 min readTravel Tips

    Quick answer

Instant means the cabin can be confirmed the moment you book. On request means the team must check the exact sailing with the ship first. Both are normal; here is how to plan around each.

An instantly available Nile cruise can be confirmed as soon as you book, because the seller holds that cabin on that sailing. An on-request cruise is not final until the team has checked the space with the ship and come back to you, so you wait for written confirmation before treating it as booked.

On Nourbelle you will see both. Some sailings can be booked online straight away, and others are sent to our team, who confirm them with the vessel. Neither label tells you whether a cruise is good, popular or nearly full. It only tells you how the confirmation happens and what you should, and should not, do while you wait.

Understanding that difference saves you from a common planning mistake: buying flights, hotels or nonrefundable extras around a cruise cabin that has not actually been confirmed yet. This guide explains how each model works, when each one makes sense, and how to plan the rest of your Egypt trip around your choice.

    What instant availability means

When a sailing shows as instantly available, the seller has the right to commit a specific cabin category on a specific sailing date without asking anyone first. In practice this usually means an allocation: a block of cabins that the ship has agreed the operator may sell directly, tracked against a live count.

Because the stock is held and counted, the booking can move straight from your selection to confirmation and payment, following the seller's normal process. You know immediately which ship, which date, which direction (for example Aswan to Luxor or Luxor to Aswan) and which cabin type you have.

Instant does not mean every detail is final the same second. Your exact cabin number may still be assigned closer to sailing, and the ship can occasionally change a program for operational reasons such as river levels or lock schedules. But the core commitment, a cabin of the type you chose on the sailing you chose, is in place.

    What on request means

On request means the seller can offer the cruise but does not hold confirmable stock for that exact combination of date and cabin. Instead, the team sends your request to the ship or its inventory holder and waits for a reply.

That reply can be a straightforward yes, a no for that cabin category with an alternative offered, or a suggestion to move by a sailing or switch direction. Until it arrives in writing, nothing is guaranteed.

On request is common on the Nile for several reasons. Smaller and boutique ships often manage their own inventory closely. Suites and single-use cabins exist in small numbers and are rarely given out as open allocations. Some dates, such as peak holidays, are tightly controlled by the vessel. None of this means the ship is sold out. It simply means a person has to check.

Why availability is checked per sailing and cabin

It helps to know what is actually being confirmed. A Nile cruise is not booked as a ship in general but as one sailing, on one date, in one direction, in one cabin category. A ship can have plenty of standard cabins free on a Monday departure and no suites left on the same day, or space on its four-night Luxor program but none on the three-night Aswan program that follows it.

That is why one ship can show as instant on one date and on request on another, and why changing the cabin type or the direction can change the label too. If the sailing you want is on request, it is worth looking at the neighboring dates and the other direction before deciding: an instantly available option may be only a day or two away. When you compare, keep the full trip in mind, because a different embarkation city changes your flights and hotel nights as well.

The table is a general pattern rather than a rule. Some suites are instantly bookable and some standard cabins are on request; the label on the sailing you choose is what counts.

    Who should choose which

Choose an instantly available sailing if

    • Your travel dates are fixed by work, school vacations or a group plan.
    • You want to book international and domestic flights the same day.
    • You care more about the route and the cabin type than about one particular ship.
    • You are booking close to departure and need certainty quickly.

An on-request sailing makes sense if

    • You have your heart set on a specific vessel, a suite or a single-use cabin.
    • Your dates have some flexibility, so an alternative sailing would still work.
    • You are planning well ahead and can wait for a reply before buying anything else.
    • You are traveling as a larger group that needs several cabins together, which usually has to be checked with the ship anyway.

Many travelers end up comparing one of each: an instant option that guarantees the dates, and an on-request option on the ship they prefer. That is a perfectly sensible approach, as long as you know which one is actually confirmed.

How to plan around an on-request booking

The golden rule is simple: treat an on-request cruise as unconfirmed until you hold written confirmation of the ship, sailing date, direction and cabin category.

Until then, avoid buying nonrefundable flights, hotel nights or tours that only work with that sailing. Nile cruises run on fixed embarkation days, and the direction of sailing shapes the whole trip. A Luxor-to-Aswan program and an Aswan-to-Luxor program start in different cities, so a flight bought too early can end up in the wrong one.

It also helps to give the team a little room. Tell us which dates around your preferred sailing would still work, whether you would accept the opposite direction, and whether a comparable ship is acceptable. A request with a second choice built in tends to reach a confirmed plan faster than one with no flexibility at all.

Finally, read what any payment at this stage actually does. Depending on the process, a payment step can be a hold, an authorization or a real charge. If you are unsure, ask before paying.

What happens when your first choice is unavailable

With instant inventory, an unavailable cabin usually simply does not appear, and you pick from what the search shows. With on-request space, the answer comes back from the ship, and a good operator does not stop at no.

Typical alternatives include the same ship on a nearby sailing, a different cabin category on the same sailing, the opposite direction on the original dates, or a comparable vessel with a similar standard and route. Because the cruise is often the fixed point of an Egypt itinerary, the team will usually look at how each alternative affects your Cairo days, internal flights and any Red Sea extension before recommending one.

If none of the options suit you, you are not committed to anything. That is exactly the protection that waiting for confirmation gives you.

    Frequently asked questions

Does on request mean the cruise is probably sold out?

No. On request means the seller does not hold confirmable stock for that exact sailing and cabin, so the space has to be checked with the ship. Many on-request requests are confirmed as asked, and others come back with a close alternative.

Should I book flights before an on-request cruise is confirmed?

It is safest not to. Wait for written confirmation of the ship, date, direction and cabin, then book flights and hotels around it. If you must book early, choose refundable or changeable fares and accept that you may need to adjust them.

Is an instantly available cabin cheaper or better?

Not necessarily. The label describes how the booking is confirmed, not the quality or value of the ship. Compare the vessel, cabin type, itinerary and inclusions the same way whichever label applies.

Can a confirmed cruise still change?

Occasionally. Ships can adjust programs for operational reasons such as river conditions or lock timings, and cabin numbers may be assigned later. Your confirmed cabin type and sailing remain the commitment, and any significant change should be communicated to you.

Can I ask the team to check an instant sailing on a different ship?

Yes. If the instantly available options do not include the vessel or cabin you want, you can send a request and the team will check it with the ship. You then compare the reply with the instant options before deciding.

If you would like help choosing between a sailing you can book now and one that needs checking, compare our Nile cruises or tell us about your trip and a specialist will help you plan around whichever one fits.
