    Sahl Hasheesh or Hurghada?

    Quick answer

Sahl Hasheesh suits a calm, resort-centered stay south of the city. Central Hurghada suits travelers who want more hotels, restaurants and freedom to explore.

Choose Sahl Hasheesh if you want a calm, polished resort stay where the hotel and its beach are the vacation. Choose central Hurghada if you want more hotel choice, restaurants and evenings out beyond your resort, and the freedom to move around easily.

Sahl Hasheesh is not a separate destination so much as a planned resort bay on the southern edge of greater Hurghada. It sits roughly 20 to 30 minutes' drive south of Hurghada International Airport, along a curved stretch of coast lined with large resorts, a seafront promenade and a small central area with shops and restaurants. Central Hurghada, by contrast, is a working city with a marina, older districts and a long resort strip along the coast road.

Both share the same airport, the same sea, and access to the same excursions. The difference is the feel of the place you return to each evening. This guide compares them side by side and suggests who fits where.

    What Sahl Hasheesh is like

Sahl Hasheesh was developed as a master-planned resort area, and it shows. Hotels are spaced out along the bay, roads are wide and quiet, and there is little of the building activity and traffic you find in parts of the city. Many resorts have extensive pools, spas, and gardens, and most guests spend the majority of their time on site.

The seafront promenade is good for a morning walk or an evening stroll, and the central area offers a handful of cafes and shops. A popular snorkeling spot in the bay, known locally as the Sunken City, features the partly submerged remains of an unfinished development that now hosts coral and fish. It is an interesting excursion for confident snorkelers, but go with a guide and check conditions.

The trade-off is that there is not much to do beyond your hotel. If you want variety in the evenings, you will be taking taxis into Hurghada.

    What central Hurghada offers

Hurghada is a large city, and where you stay within it matters. The marina area is the most walkable, with restaurants, cafes and boats leaving for excursions. The older downtown districts are livelier and more local, with markets and everyday city life. The long resort strip along the coast road offers large hotels with direct beach access, and some stretches have their own restaurants and entertainment within walking distance.

This variety is Hurghada's main strength. You can choose an all-inclusive resort but still go out for a seafood dinner, walk to the marina for an evening, or arrange excursions on short notice. It works well for groups where people want different things and for travelers who get restless staying in one hotel.

The downside is that parts of the city are busy, built up and noisy, and beach quality varies more from hotel to hotel than in Sahl Hasheesh.

    Beaches and snorkeling

In both areas, the coastline has shallow water close to shore, often with a reef table that is not ideal for walking on. Many hotels solve this with long jetties that take you out to deeper water and the reef edge, which is where the better snorkeling from the shore is. When comparing hotels, look specifically for a jetty, a house reef and a sandy entry area for children. These details matter more than which area you choose.

Much of the region's reef snorkeling is reached by boat, particularly the Giftun Islands, part of a protected area off central Hurghada. Boat trips leave from the marina and other piers, and most excursion companies collect guests from both central Hurghada and Sahl Hasheesh. Pickup from Sahl Hasheesh simply starts a little earlier and may cost a little more.

    Getting around and excursions

From Sahl Hasheesh, central Hurghada is a taxi ride away, typically around half an hour depending on where you are going. Some resorts run shuttles; check before you book. Within central Hurghada, taxis and ride-hailing are easy, and some areas are walkable.

Excursions are available equally from both bases: snorkeling and diving boats, desert trips by jeep or quad bike, glass-bottom boats, and longer day trips to Luxor, which is about four hours away by road. If you plan to do a lot of excursions, central Hurghada saves a little time on each pickup. If you plan mostly to relax at your resort, Sahl Hasheesh's distance from the city is part of its appeal.

    Weather, wind and value

The weather is effectively the same in both areas: very hot summers, warm and often windy winter days, and cooler evenings from roughly December to February, when you will want a light jacket at dinner. Sea temperatures fall to around the low 20s Celsius in winter, so a shorty wetsuit makes long snorkeling sessions more comfortable. Spring and fall are comfortable seasons for a beach stay combined with sightseeing. Wind is a regular feature of this coast, and resorts on more sheltered parts of the bay can feel noticeably calmer on breezy days, so it is worth asking about beach orientation and windbreaks.

On value, Sahl Hasheesh hotels are mostly larger upscale resorts, many sold on an all-inclusive basis, which makes sense when you will eat most meals on site. Central Hurghada offers a much wider spread, including smaller hotels and room-only or breakfast-only rates, which suit travelers who plan to eat out. Compare what is actually included, not only the room rate.

    Other nearby options worth comparing

If neither quite fits, the coast offers alternatives. Makadi Bay and Soma Bay, farther south, are also resort-focused areas with a slightly more remote feel; Soma Bay in particular is known for wind and kitesurfing. El Gouna, north of Hurghada, is a self-contained resort town built around lagoons, with its own restaurants, marina and evening life, offering more independence than a typical resort bay. Each uses Hurghada's airport, so they fit equally well after a Nile cruise. Our Hurghada destination page covers the wider area.
